Willow River Park Map
Challenge
For hundreds of years, Indigenous people of the Iroquois, Anishinaabe, and Haudenosaunee territories have gathered on the land of what is now “Victoria Park”, to perform ceremonies, feast, and gather to share stories. Recently, local indigenous leaders and activists have been advocating for the official renaming of the park, and a space in the park dedicated to indigenous and community gatherings, however, their attempts have been unsuccessful. For this project, I designed a map to support the proposal of a “rebrand” for the park.
Concept
For this project, I designed a map to support the proposal for the official renaming of the park. Already the local indigenous community has started to refer to the park as Willow River Park, so this design was made as an act of solidarity
Process
I started by doing research into the current events pertaining to “Victoria Park”, and took notes on the different landmarks and visual attributes of the area. I then made a multitude of rough thumbnail sketches to guide my digital illustrations later in the process. Mind mapping was also an important part of the process for sifting through ideas and potential visual elements.
Solution
The final design solution features 11 original illustrations all composed into a cohesive illustrated map layout of the park. Intended to be featured in local publications the map would be part of a larger solidarity effort to officially rename the park.
